Description
The EZ-MCP1 is an in-line microphone compressor designed to maintain consistent mic levels and control overloads that produce distortion and clipping. It fits between a dynamic or condenser microphone and a mic-level mixer or amplifier input. The unit delivers up to 30 dB of compression to tame wide variations in signal level and improve overall intelligibility.
Setup is straightforward using the front-panel single-turn LEVEL trimmer and the compression LED that indicates activity. A rear-panel output level trimmer allows output adjustment though it is normally left in the default position. Automatic phantom switching provides 24 V phantom when the connected mic input supplies phantom voltage.
Performance specifications include a frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz and THD+N under 0.5% at the compressor threshold. The device offers an input sensitivity range from -60 dBu to -30 dBu for threshold crossing and a maximum input level of 0 dBu at minimum gain. Output is adjustable between -55 dBu and -30 dBu with a normal output of -45 dBu and a nominal balanced output impedance of 150 Q.
Connectivity is XLR input and output on balanced lines and the module senses and passes 24 V phantom per IEC 61938:2013 when present at the output. Indicator LEDs include red for compression activity, green for phantom present, and blue for power. Input impedance is greater than 1 kO balanced and the unit provides greater than 55 dB CMRR across low frequencies.
The EZ-MCP1 is suitable for recording, paging and public address applications including houses of worship, restaurants, clubs, meeting rooms, classrooms and conference rooms. It improves intelligibility for spoken word sources and protects downstream equipment from transients and clipping. The compressor’s fast automatic attack and release times make it suitable for live voice applications where consistent levels are required.
Installation is quick and requires minimal operator adjustment – set the front LEVEL until the compression LED just begins to flash during normal speech and leave the output control at the default setting unless fine-tuning is needed. The unit operates from a 24 Vdc supply and draws 55 mA idle and up to 70 mA with phantom present. The compact module ships in a cardboard box sized 9.5 x 7 x 2.25 in and is ready for quick integration into mic chains.
