Description
The KONA 5 is a professional PCIe capture and playback card designed to handle modern high bandwidth video and audio workflows. It provides bidirectional 12G-SDI I/O and a full-size HDMI 2.0 output capable of high frame rate 4K/UltraHD up to 60p. The card supports 10-bit color depths and application-dependent 12-bit color for demanding image fidelity.
KONA 5 supports 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 color workflows and can ingest or output 4K/UltraHD, 2K, HD and SD formats. HDR delivery is supported via HDR10 and HLG on HDMI 2.0, including HDR InfoFrame metadata per HDMI 2.0a/CTA-861.3 where application support exists. Audio I/O includes embedded SDI channels, HDMI embedded audio and AES/EBU via the supplied breakout cable.
The card uses an 8-lane PCIe interface to deliver the throughput required for HFR 4K/UltraHD and multi-channel streaming or capture when paired with compatible host software. Supported digital inputs and outputs include 12G/6G/3G-SDI and quad-link 3G-SDI configurations for flexible signal routing. Timecode and reference input are provided to keep sources and devices synchronized within a production environment.
Physical connectivity is extended via the included breakout cable which provides 8-channel AES/EBU inputs and outputs, RS-422 machine control, and LTC in/out. On-board RS-422 control allows integration with deck control systems using Sony 9-pin protocol. The HDMI 2.0 port enables monitoring on consumer and professional displays while maintaining HDR and high frame rate support.
KONA 5 is suited to post production, broadcast, live compositing, virtual sets and graphics workflows where accurate color, HDR compatibility and high frame rate video are required. The card can be locked to external reference signals and passes SDI while capturing to enable simultaneous monitoring and ingest. Compatibility spans macOS, Windows and Linux platforms with vendor software support for advanced features.
Installation is straightforward in workstations with an available 8-lane PCIe slot and ATX power connection. The card is compact and built for continuous operation within professional studio environments, offering robust electrical and mechanical design. Firmware and driver updates from the vendor further facilitate integration and ongoing feature support.
